ENGLISH AND LOTE (Languages Other Than English)

Our world is constantly changing; students studying English at SCCC learn a range of analytical and evaluative tools to better communicate in our fast-paced society. English is a complex and developing language and students learn the skills to navigate a variety of texts, from Shakespeare through to podcasts.

Our professional and experienced staff help students hone their literacy skills, whether it be through short story writing, multimodal presentations or creating media packages. Our focus on texts, language structure and cross-medium literacy encourages students to develop in-depth thinking skills and a wider view of their roles in a growing global society. At SCCC, we foster students’ abilities to:

  • write and speak with confidence
  • love reading
  • learn about how the English language works and changes over time
  • adjust language types to meet the needs of a target audience
  • analyse and evaluate texts to develop an informed opinion.

We utilise formative and summative assessment across Years 7-12 which helps build foundations in students’ learning and skills throughout their high school experience. This enables us to help them produce quality work beyond their own expectations.

There are a number of activities and events to support students’ interests such as active debate teams with Queensland Debating Union, performances by Shake & Stir Theatre Co and Poetry in Action, visiting author talks and writer’s workshops as well as many cross-curricular initiatives to develop well rounded learners.

The SCCC Japanese Program aims to develop an international perspective and understanding in our students in an attempt to prepare them for an ever changing and exceedingly globalised world.

With globalisation occurring at a faster rate than ever before, it is critical to the continuing and future success of your child that they be Asia literate. The Japanese program helps students to develop critical thinking, analysis, and problem solving skills.
