Business and Economics
Business and Economics at SCCC, as per the Australian Curriculum, falls under the Social Sciences and Humanities Department, and aims to expose students to the real-life business world, and to equip and prepare them for the rigours of the working world. Across both the Middle and Senior years, students develop the skills essential to succeed in Business; including strong leadership, organisational skills, time management, communication and team work.
In Years 7-10, students may choose Business and Economics an elective lasting one semester. Students are assessed across a wide range of mediums, including exams, speeches, multimodal presentations and portfolios. In a fun and stimulating environment, students learn the foundations of Business, Economics and Accounting, culminating in the preparation of a Business Plan in Year 10.
In the Senior Years, students can choose Business Communication and Technologies (BCT), Accounting and Certificate III in Business. While BCT and Accounting are both Overall Position (OP) subjects, the Certificate III is a practical, E-learning course catering to students aiming to pursue the VET pathway, or for those who are keen to enter the workforce immediately after school.
Humanities and Social Sciences
All students in Years 7 and 8 study Social Sciences, which is comprised of a semester of History and a semester of Geography. In Year 9 students are required to study History over two semesters. Students examine the Ancient World, Indigenous Issues, Government and Citizenship, Environmental Issues, and Australian and World History.
In Year 10 students choose semester-long electives, which include Marine Geography, Ancient History, Modern History and Legal Studies. These electives offer students a taster, which aids them in the important Senior subject selection process.
In the Senior Years, a wide variety of subjects are offered, depending on the demand from students. These include Ancient History, Modern History, Geography and Legal Studies.
There is a strong focus within the Social Science department on the development of skills that will be of great use to students in university, TAFE, and indeed the workplace. These include skills in presentation and communication, research, team work and cooperation.
Many excursions occur across the Social Sciences department. In Year 7 as part of the Geography unit, students partake in a field trip in which they examine the local Redcliffe area, which is always a fun-filled and stimulating day. Other highlights include trips to the Queensland Courts for Legal Studies, the Abbey Museum in Caboolture and the University of Queensland for Ancient History.
