The Junior Years of schooling at Southern Cross Catholic College allow students to build on their relationships with friends, staff and students from the three campuses. Academically the students are challenged to expand their skills and knowledge whilst staff are there to nurture individual abilities and foster educational success.
Learning and Teaching in the Junior Years is developed from the guidelines provided in the Australian Curriculum. The learning areas in the Australian Curriculum are; English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Technologies, and Languages other than English (Japanese in Year 6). Teachers ensure all students are provided with multiple opportunities to demonstrate the Achievement Standards outlined within the Australian Curriculum in a range of contexts and topics. The students are also required to demonstrate learnings in Religious Education which fulfil the requirements of Brisbane Catholic Education's Religious Education Guidelines.
Inspired and passionate junior years teachers are committed to knowing their learners and the impact their learning experiences have had on their academic, spiritual, physical and social/emotional development. Goals, expectations, practice and feedback are all key elements in making learning visible to the junior years students and families at Southern Cross Catholic College.
The Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 curriculum is balanced to ensure each student will journey on a seamless transition to the next phase of learning, the Middle Years.
A highlight of the Junior Years Phase of Learning is participating in the practical education of Christian living through camps. Students in Years 5 and 6 attend annual camps to further develop life skills and to give them more opportunities to interact with and strengthen relationships with their peers from the other campuses. These camps feature outdoor recreation activities and teach the students practical skills of self-management, physical skills, social skills and leadership.
Every student in Year 6 has the prospect to hold a position of leadership at their campus. As leaders of the Early and Junior Years Campuses, students are encouraged to involve themselves in the junior leadership program which aligns with the senior school leadership model by actively promoting the values of the College.
