SCCC celebrates inspirational HPE teacher who practices what she preaches

Southern Cross Catholic College (SCCC) Health and PE teacher, Mrs Deana Leo, has been awarded the Australian Council for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (ACHPER) Queensland Inspirational Teacher of the Year for 2015.

Presented at the prestigious annual Women in Sport breakfast at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 14 October, the award is presented to a female HPE teacher who dedicates their valuable time and energy to support, lead and inspire school students to achieve their personal best in HPE, sport or other active pursuits.

Nominated by students and School Officer Mrs Deb Kennedy, Mrs Leo said it was a surprise and an honour to receive such an award.

“I’m really humbled to receive this award however I love the fact that I can use my own passion for health and fitness to inspire my students,” Mrs Leo said.

“I’ve also been able to direct my passion for running into the creation of the ‘Southern Sloggers’ where staff and students run in events for personal achievements as well as charities.

“It’s been a great community-building tool,” Mrs Leo said.

Mrs Leo practices what she preaches and offers her time and resources to coordinate staff and students in events such as the Youngcare Budgie Bolt, Redcliffe Jetty-to-Jetty, the Cherbourg Reconciliation Fun Run, and the upcoming Relay for Life to raise money for the Cancer Council.

Nominating Year 11 student Krystelle Edwards said Mrs Leo is an inspiration.

“Mrs Leo has inspired me to become more active in sport over the years and has taken students to various running fundraisers and ran alongside us.

“I am honoured to have her as a PE teacher.  I would not be doing senior PE today if it wasn’t for her,” Krystelle said.

Fellow Year 11 student Deanne Elliott said it was Mrs Leo’s passion that inspired her to do well in class and participate in extra curricula sports.

“Mrs Leo helped not only the class, but has gone beyond to help the school, sacrificing her time to be there for us,” she said.

Year 7 student Jade Starr also received a Rising Star award at the breakfast, which is presented to those students 14 years and under who have achieved in multiple sporting arenas.

Jade’s aim is to represent Australia in swimming however she has participated in swimming, cross country and athletics at a regional, state and national level.

“My aim is to be picked for the Australian swimming team to represent my country.  I know that I must be self-disciplined and committed if I am to be picked and I am prepared to do whatever is necessary to get there,” she said.

SCCC congratulates Deane and Jade on their well-deserved achievements.
