It is with a tremendous sense of pride and appreciation that we open the 2016 school year with congratulations to our Seniors of 2015. The results produced by this group of students was outstanding and each can be duly proud. Both in the OP and VET pathways the students delivered performances that have set an outstanding platform for their future studies and employment.
Emily Marty, Julian Pepper and Jake Sykes all achieved Queensland’s top tertiary entrance score, an OP 1. This represented 5.17% of OP eligible students at Southern Cross Catholic College which is simply outstanding. With 18.96% of students achieving in the OP 1-5 range, this percentage was equally impressive. Similarly the numbers of students who achieved an OP 10 or lower (44.82%) is worthy of celebration as this means these students have opened doors to almost any course of study they could wish for. The college will welcome back these students and their parents and recognise these student achievements at assembly during February.
On the Vocational Education and Training front our Senior students again delivered some incredibly noteworthy results. The College trainee of the year in 2015, Kurt Shooter, has been awarded a TAFE scholarship and bursary which will assist as he furthers himself toward his Diesel Fitting trade. On a more global level the numbers of students completing Vocational Certificates at Level three or lower were quite stunning. 56 Certificates were awarded - 23 at the Certificate 3 level. With only 20 students completing Senior in a full-time Vocational Education pathway this indicates many have achieved multiple certificates across their senior years and positions them very well in the employment and apprenticeship market. Southern Cross has certainly delivered a great foundation for those students.
Congratulations must go to the wonderfully committed group of teachers and support staff here at Southern Cross for their guidance and mentorship of these students across their final years of schooling. Our 2015 students have left a wonderful legacy to grow on and certainly set the bar high for the seniors of 2016.
