Year 12 student Calvin O’Connor has been selected to participate in PCYC Queensland’s Emerging Leader program which involves him completing his Duke of Edinburgh International Award and trekking the Kokoda Track as part of his ‘Adventurous Journey.’
One of 12 teenagers selected from PCYC Queensland, Calvin will learn about the history of Kokoda and experience firsthand the physical and mental challenges faced by Australian troops who fought along the track during WWII. They will be supported by six mentors and two PCYC staff who will join them on the trip.
The group will depart from Papua New Guinea on 15 September 2017 and will spend nine days in the mountains.
Each day will involve 7-10 hours of hiking, camping in local villages, visiting the small schools and enjoying the company of the locals. The group will also spend two nights in Port Moresby and visit the Bomara War Cemetery where 3,000 servicemen are buried.
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is a leading youth development program that empowers all young people to explore their full potential, regardless of their location or circumstance. Every young person aged 14-25 who takes part learns a life skill, improves their physical wellbeing, volunteers in their community and experiences a team adventure in a new environment.
Through this challenging journey of self-discovery participants are equipped and empowered to achieve their personal best, to take ownership of their goals and life choices as well as become actively engaged within the community and workforce.
With three progressively more challenging levels (Bronze, Silver and Gold) The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award celebrates and recognises each Award as the improvement of an individual through persistence and achievement.
Calvin was presented with his Bronze Award at a recent campus assembly.
At Southern Cross Catholic College the Duke of Edinburgh Award is co-ordinated by the Redcliffe PCYC and the college is happy to assist students access the program if interested.
