Southern Cross Catholic College (SCCC) Year 10 student, Heidi Leeman has won the prestigious Somerset National Poetry Prize.
This competition, as part of the 2018 Celebration of Literature, is a three-day writing festival on the Gold Coast that has been running for 25 years.
Aimed at secondary students to inspire and enrich youth literature, the competition affirms poetry as a worthwhile literary pursuit and is a tool for stimulating excellence in writing.
Hesitant to enter, Heidi was encouraged by Southern Cross Catholic College’s Potential Plus Facilitator, Mrs Lorraine Powers.
“We saw the potential Heidi had with her literary skills and we urged her to participate,” Mrs Powers said.
“It was an amazing feat to be shortlisted however to win such a respected and significant award in the literary world is outstanding. We are all very proud.”
In winning the award, Heidi beat thousands of entrants from across Australia. She was among six shortlisted finalists from New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
Heidi has won a cash prize along with the honour of winning one of the most noted youth literary prizes in the country.
