Twenty-seven Year 10 students spent a day at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) to investigate future careers, to help make good senior subject selections and to raise aspirations for tertiary studies.
With subject selection approaching in Term 3, the university experience provided clarity for the subjects required for future careers.
In preparation for the event, the students selected their day's activity from 10 diverse streams each containing three lectures, workshops or interactive experiences on a variety of careers. Topics included Paramedical Science, Criminology, Screen Media, Marketing, Nursing and Midwifery. Students picked their stream based on the topics that interested them the most.
Over 1,500 students attended and it was a wonderful opportunity to experience USQ facilities and meet future classmates.
Students were surveyed to see how the experience contributed to their career learning with 90% finding the experience useful; 80% reporting they now feel more confident in their future career plans and 80% feeling more informed about what subject choices to make.
By the time these Year 10 students graduate the USC Petrie campus will be operational providing another option for tertiary education much closer to home.
