Southern Cross Catholic College has not one, but two students accepted to attend the National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) in Canberra in January 2020.
Thanks to the efforts, drive and determination of science teacher Mr Alistair Lavers, current Year 11 students Ella Babarovich and Olivia Sanderson will attend Australia's flagship science event at the Australian National University.
The NYSF is a 12-day residential program designed to give students with a passion for Science a broader understanding of the diverse study and career options available in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) and to encourage continued studies in these fields.
Students visit science and technology related laboratories and facilities, go on site tours, take part in workshops, listen to lectures and participate in group activities that improve communication and presentation skills. Not to mention networking with like-minded students from all over the country.
To have one student from the College selected to attend would be an achievement, but two is testimony to Mr Laver's passion for science and his own experience as a NYSF participant.
Mr Lavers also needs to be congratulated for facilitating sponsorship of $1500 per student through our local Redcliffe Sunrise Rotary Club. We thank them for their support.
We look forward to hearing about the students' experience in the new year and how they will inspire other students to follow in their footsteps.
