Girls lead the way in STEM at SCCC

Girls are paving the way in STEM and Science at Southern Cross Catholic College.

Four students have been selected to attend two upcoming prestigious events which will give them the edge as they aim for careers in STEM and Science.

Determined Year 11 students Niamh Prunty and Georgia Cullen have been selected for the upcoming 2020 QUT STEM camp to be held at Garden's Point Campus.

The camp provides high-achieving Year 11 science students with the opportunity to attend an interactive week-long engaging activity to solve some of the major challenges facing our society and planet.

Niamh will work with world leading QUT researchers using an Artificial Intelligence (AI) system that utilises drones and infrared imaging to count koala populations. The system will be used to automate the detection of koalas and contribute to koala conservation, critically important after the recent devastating bushfires in Australia.

Georgia will work with a group of ingenious young scientists modelling the Mars 2020 mission from launch in July 2020 through to collecting samples to test for signs of life using Rover's robotic arm.

A transdisciplinary approach will be used, combining physics, chemistry, rocket science and aerospace, robotics and Python programming, geology and material science, to embark on interdisciplinary 'travel' and to test for macroscopic biosignatures of past life.

Georgia said “I expect the camp to provide clarity towards my future endeavours in the STEM fields," and Niamh is “looking forward to collaborative work with accomplished scientists and likeminded students who share my passion in the STEM fields."

Another Year 11 Science student, Charlotte Grant, has gone through a rigorous selection process competing with the top Year 11 Science students in the country, to secure a place in the 10 day residential camp of the 2021 National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) at the Australian National University, Canberra.

With the support of the Redcliffe Rotary Club, Charlotte will visit science and technology related facilities, go on site tours, listen to lectures, take part in workshops, go to social events and participate in group activities the improve communication and presentation skills.

“The camp will provide me a great opportunity to follow my passion in science and to connect with like-minded peers in an enabling environment," Charlotte said.

Current Year 12 student, Ella Babarovich was selected to attend the 2020 NYSF however was unable to attend due to the devastating fires at the start of the year. Ella will also join Charlotte and attend the 2021 camp.

The students are to be congratulated on their determination and passion to achieve so highly in the fields of STEM and Science.
