Unwavering In Our Pursuit

At Southern Cross Catholic College, we offer many opportunities for students who demonstrate the ability to be Unwavering in their Pursuit. These opportunities include the following curricular and co-curricular programs.

Curriculum Pursuits of Excellence

In Years 9 and 10, we offer an opportunity for students who demonstrate ability to partake in an extension program in the areas of English, Mathematics and Science.

This opportunity is by invitation, however students are able to indicate an expression of interest in wishing to be considered. The offer is based on several criteria, including past academic results, work ethic and passion for the subject.

The college offers the following Pursuit of Excellence programs:

Pursuit of Excellence – English Extension at SCCC

Unwavering in our pursuit of academic excellence, very able students in Years 9 and 10 are selected on performance and teacher recommendation to form extension classes. In Year 9, students can choose Creative Writing as one of their options

Among the activities and competitions on offer in our English Extension programs are:

  • Excursions, visiting speakers and performers
  • Creative Writing
  • Workshops

Pursuit of Excellence – Science Extension at SCCC

Unwavering in our pursuit and encouraging our students to satisfy their curiosity by doing, the Years 9 and 10 Science Extension classes go beyond expectation in learning, exploration and discovery in preparation for the Senior Years sciences and in the critical thinking skills.

Pursuit of Excellence – Mathematics Extension at SCCC

Southern Cross Catholic College seeks to encourage and extend those students who have an aptitude for mathematics. Students have the option in Years 9 and 10 of applying for a position in an extension mathematics subject.

These extension subjects seek to engage students’ love for maths through accelerated learning plans, deeper understanding of topics and the introduction of advanced concepts.

Pursuit of Excellence – Multi-age STEM Project at SCCC

To be unwavering in our pursuit for all students is the aim of this Multi-age STEM Project. By invitation, students who seek to push the limits of understanding, research and thought processes are provided an opportunity to work as a part of a multi-age team to develop hypothesises and seek to prove or disprove these big questions through the conventions of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Co-Curriculum Pursuits of Excellence

Potential Plus is Southern Cross Catholic College’s unique program for developing talent and aspiration in our top performing students by providing opportunities to inspire, extend, enrich and encourage across a wide range of co-curricular activities. Our students develop a portfolio of skills and capabilities which enhances future employability.

Opportunities To Inspire

  • Opti-MINDS Creative Sustainability Challenge is an inclusive team challenge which empowers participants to think, create and communicate.
  • Da Vinci Decathlonis a rigorous academic competition designed to challenge and stimulate the minds of academically able students.
  • QUT Vice Chancellor's STEM Camp for high-achieving Year 11students.

Opportunities To Enrich

  • Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award - This highly regarded program is offered in partnership with our award body PCYC.
  • Lions Youth of the Year – this development program designed to encourage, foster and develop leadership in conjunction with other citizenship qualities in youth.
  • Public Speaking - Opportunities which enable students to develop the vital skill of ‘presentation literacy’.

Opportunities To Extend

  • ICAS Competitions (International Competitions and Assessments for Schools)- Rigorous external examinations used to prepare students for future QCE expectations.
  • CAT – Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition seeks to identify computer programming potential.
  • CAT – Computational and Algorithmic Thinking Competition seeks to identify computer programming potential.
  • STEM@QUT Workshops offers students real-world insight into their STEM future.

Opportunities To Encourage

  • “Experience USC” builds university aspiration for Year 10 students about to make senior year subject choices.
  • QUT Power of Engineering offers insight into engineering careers for young women.
  • Young Writers Group encourages and supports students to take their first steps in creative writing.
